中国日报网英语点津每年都会推选年度热门词语的评选活动，由网友们确定当年的十大热门词语。
今年的十大热门词语基本上都是全年最具新闻效应的事件，没有如美国大选和英国脱欧公投那样出现“黑天鹅”效应。
1. 美国总统大选 US presidential election
11月8日，美国举行总统大选投票。各州投票结果显示，共和党总统候选人唐纳德•特朗普击败民主党候选人希拉里•克林顿，获得超过半数的选举人票，当选美国总统。
不过，美国自家的媒体都觉得这是一次失败的选举，是民主的失败。《纽约时报》当天发的社论里，很不情愿地将特朗普称为“总统”，并声称对于数千万美国人——甚至是全世界的人来说，他成为美国未来的总统是难以想象的。

2. 英国脱欧 Brexit
英国“脱欧”公投于6月23日举行，即全民投票表决英国是否脱离欧盟。结果，投票选择leave的脱欧派胜出，英国真的要离开欧盟了。结果宣布后不久，英国首相卡梅伦便宣布辞职。更为怪异的是，新当选的首相却是“留欧派”特莉莎·梅。

韩国首位女总统朴槿惠身陷“闺蜜干政”丑闻，媒体报道显示，她的闺蜜崔顺实曾经帮她修改演讲稿，还涉嫌接触大量机密文件。目前，事件主角崔顺实以及相关人员已被韩国检方起诉，朴槿惠先后发表四次对国民讲话，表示明年4月会下台。目前，反对党已经对朴槿惠提起弹劾案，正在等待国会裁决。

4. 南海仲裁案 South China Sea arbitration
菲律宾南海仲裁案仲裁庭于7月12日公布关于菲律宾南海仲裁案的实体问题裁决。对此，中国政府多次郑重声明，菲律宾单方面提起仲裁违背国际法，仲裁庭对此案没有管辖权，中国不接受、不参与仲裁。

7月12日，中国政府拒绝承认南海仲裁案结果，坚持通过双边协商来解决南海争端。
President Xi Jinping said China's territorial sovereignty and maritime interests in the South China Sea will not be affected by the award in any circumstances.
国家主席习近平表示，不管在什么情况下，中国对南海的领土主权和海洋权益不会受到仲裁案结果的影响。
5. 里约奥运会 Rio Olympics
2016年里约热内卢奥运会即第31届夏季奥林匹克运动会，于当地时间8月5日至21日举行。里约热内卢成为奥运史上首个主办奥运会的南美洲城市，同时也是首个主办奥运会的葡萄牙语城市。里约奥运会期间，吴敏霞成为“奥运五金王”、洪荒少女傅园慧成“网红”、“飞鱼”菲尔普斯“比赛脸”走红。

6. 二十国集团领导人峰会 G20 summit
第11届二十国集团领导人峰会9月4日至5日在浙江杭州举行，峰会主题为“构建创新、活力、联动、包容的世界经济”。在杭州G20第二、三、四、五阶段会议上，各成员、嘉宾国领导人和国际组织负责人就更高效的全球经济金融治理、强劲的国际贸易和投资、包容和联动式发展等议题深入交换意见，共同讨论气候变化、难民、反恐融资、全球公共卫生等影响世界经济的其他突出问题，达成广泛共识。

7. 神州十一号载人飞船 Shenzhou XI manned spacecraft
北京时间10月17日7时49分，执行与天宫二号交会对接任务的神舟十一号载人飞船，在酒泉卫星发射中心发射升空后准确进入预定轨道，顺利将2名航天员送上太空。飞船与天宫二号对接后，航天员进入天宫二号空间实验室生活30天，这也是中国航天员在太空生活时间最长的一次。
